Serpent Mound

As we traveled Route 32, the Appalachian Highway, we took a detour to visit Serpent Mound. Serpent Mound is a 1,330-foot-long, three-foot-high prehistoric effigy mound located on a plateau of a crater along Ohio Brush creek in Adams, County, Ohio. We first climbed the observation tower for a view. In the picture below, the tail of the serpent is behind Nathan.

The tail of the serpent, shown below, is aligned with the winter solstice sunrise.


This picture shows the view looking out over the body of the serpent toward the head.


The head of the serpent is aligned with the summer solstice sunset. Here's a picture of Nathan looking toward the west.
