Serpent Mound

As we traveled Route 32, the Appalachian Highway, we took a detour to visit Serpent Mound. Serpent Mound is a 1,330-foot-long, three-foot-high prehistoric effigy mound located on a plateau of a crater along Ohio Brush creek in Adams, County, Ohio. You can read more about the Serpent Mound here and here.

We first climbed the observation tower for a view. In the picture below, the tail of the serpent is behind Nathan.

The tail of the serpent, shown below, is aligned with the winter solstice sunrise.

This picture shows the view looking out over the body of the serpent toward the head.

The head of the serpent is aligned with the summer solstice sunset. Here's a picture of Nathan looking toward the west.

And finally, here's a picture of Nathan being irritated with his mom for interrupting him by taking pictures:

Spring Break

One of our spring break trips was to Cincinnati. Although most of the time was spent at the North Central Sociological Association conference, we did find time to visit the Newport Aquarium.

The main draw, at least for Nathan, was the shark exhibit and petting station. Here's a sand tiger shark...

and here's the Shark Ray:

Music Class

Parents had the opportunity to watch the kindergarten music class, taught by Mrs. Horn. Lots of singing, dancing, and enthusiasm -- it's one of Nathan's favorite classes!

Dancing and moving!

Visit from Aunt Susan & cousins

We were thrilled to have Susan, Owen, Elizabeth and Sam in our home for a few days in January. In addition to showing them around Athens, we spent an afternoon at the ice rink.

January 2, 2008

Nathan started the year by losing his first tooth. The second one came out a few weeks later. No blood, no tears -- a very proud moment for Nathan.
